How did McDonald’s Start?
Who could have ever predicted that a restaurant chain created to serve burgers and milkshakes would soon be known as The Happiest Place on Earth, but when you look at where McDonald’s started, it’s clear how hard work pays off. In 1940, two brothers named Richard and Maurice (Maurie) MacDonald opened a drive-in restaurant in San Bernardino, California.
To keep with the theme of their hamburger stand McDonald’s Bar-B-Q, they decided to call themselves Mac and Dick. Ten years later, a third brother joined them—James R—and they changed their name to match their company: Macdonald Brothers Restaurants. They added Golden Arches and Speedee Service System logos to their restaurants, which helped streamline operations even further.
By 1954, there were more than one hundred locations around southern California serving up burgers for just 18 cents each. It was time for a change though, so they officially became McDonald’s Corporation—named after Dick’s middle name.
In 1955, Ray Kroc discovered their innovative system while traveling across America selling milkshake mixers. He quickly bought out all other franchisees and made himself president of what was now called McDonald’s Systems Inc. By 1961 he had more than 700 locations under his belt—but not without some trouble along the way!
